KUELAP FORTRESS AND CABLECABINS

An hour from Leymebamba lies the entrance to the archaeological wonder of Kuélap. Located on the edge of a cliff, the fortress features a gigantic stone wall more than 20 meters high and 500 meters long. Inside are more than 500 circular houses decorated with classic Chachapoya stone designs, a testament to the ingenuity of their builders. Access is via a modern cable car system that allows visitors to admire the splendid landscape surrounding this monumental fortress.

THE REVASH MAUSOLEUMS AND THE VILLAGE OF SAN BARTOLO

Another excursion by car from Leymebamba is a visit to the Revash mausoleums. This is an extraordinary Chachapoyas funerary center built into the cliffs of a rocky mountain, at 2,700 meters above sea level, very close to the village of San Bartolo, in the province of Luya. The mausoleums are very well preserved; some have two floors, paintings, and windows with different geometric shapes. To get there, you must walk 2 km from San Bartolo along a wide trail that also allows you to experience the traditional architecture of the village and the beautiful landscape of this very special place.

VILLAGE AND OLD CHURCH OF LA JALCA GRANDE

Where the town of La Jalca Grande stands today, the first city of San Juan de la Frontera de los Chachapoyas, capital of eastern Peru, was founded in 1538. One of the monuments that reflects the syncretism of the early years of the conquest is the Church of Our Lady of Mercedes, built in the 16th century. It is a stone construction with zigzag designs characteristic of pre-Hispanic chachapoyas buildings. Unfortunately, the tower, which was separated from the church nave, collapsed after the 2021 earthquake, and a reconstruction project is expected to begin. Near La Jalca Grande, the archaeological remains of the ancient town of Ollape are located.
